Tiger Swallowtails

Victoria Beyer

I was out looking for bird to photograph last week but these tiger swallowtails were far more cooperative. Earlier in the summer they are hard to photograph because they just don’t sit still for long. But at this time of year, they are feeding on the joe pye weed for several minutes at a time.

Mammatus Clouds

Victoria Beyer

It was the hazy yellow light painting my kitchen windows that caught my eye. It was unusual for sunset to be so yellow, and it turned out to be from wildfire smoke which we rarely see here in Pittsburgh. I went outside to watch the show, and was doubly surprised to see these undulating rows of bulbous clouds, Mammatus clouds, which are also unusual. It was a dusk to remember.

Trillium

Victoria Beyer

My spring is not complete without visiting the Trillium Trail in Pittsburgh. It’s absolutely stunning when all the trillium are blooming, but I never feel like I can capture it adequately in a photo. The blooms are just so delicate, dotting the woodland floor, and my head is just swiveling when I walk, trying to take it all in. I can’t ever fit enough of it into the frame. But, every year, I try.
